Vancouver B.C. (31 July 2014) – Housing affordability and solving homelessness are the most important challenges facing Vancouver, according to a poll conducted this month by Justason Market Intelligence.

Housing and housing affordability top the list of Vancouver’s challenges with unprompted mentions from 27% of residents, followed by homelessness and poverty (17%). A further five per cent (5%) mention cost of living, a challenge related both to housing affordability and homelessness. Public transportation and the municipal government’s fiscal management also register as important challenges for groups of fewer than 10%.

Among renters, one-third (35%) cite housing affordability as a top challenge for the city.

Residents aged 65 and older cite fiscal management / wasteful spending as a top concern (17%), near par with this group’s concern about housing affordability (22%) and homelessness (18%).

Priority issues

Mirroring these top concerns for the City, just over half of Vancouverites identify ending homelessness as the top priority for Vancouver for the next three years (54%). Improving vehicle infrastructure is a top priority for one-third (32%) of residents, ahead of improving cycling and walking infrastructure (21%).

Is Vision Vancouver supporting fading?

The same poll finds that half of likely voters now describe themselves as less supportive of Vision Vancouver than they were a few years ago. Fifteen per cent (15%) are now more supportive of Vision, while 31% say there has been no change in their level of support for Vision Vancouver.

Groups who are now less supportive of Vision:

  • Voters aged 55 and older (60-65% are now less supportive)
  • Supporters of Gregor Robertson in 2011 (39%)
