The race for Mayor and City Council
2014-07-30
Vancouver B.C. (30 July 2014) – If Vancouver’s municipal elections were held today, 59% of likely voters would support Gregor Robertson of Vision Vancouver. Forty-one per cent (41%) would support Kirk LaPointe of the Non-Partisan Association (NPA).
Voters most supportive of Vision’s Gregor Robertson:
- Under 45 years (74-75% versus 49-55% among residents 45 and older)
- Renters (72% versus 48% among owners)
- Regular bicycle commuters (81% versus 59% among infrequent commuters and non-cyclists)
Voters most supportive of NPA’s Kirk LaPointe:
- 45 and older (45-51% versus 25-26% among residents under 45 years)
- Owners (52% versus 28% among renters)
- Infrequent and non-cycling commuters (41% versus 19% among commuters)
Why support Gregor Robertson?
Support for Gregor Robertson is driven by some concern about bringing the NPA back to power and support for Robertson’s progressive platforms for the environment, cycling and the homeless:
- Not the NPA: “Prefer his poor record on development than having the NPA back in power.”
- Policy on environment sustainability: “I like the direction Vision is taking the greenest city and looking at the green economy.”
- Progressive / has plan for the City: “He’s progressive and thinks into the future.”
- Urban cycling policy: “Strong support of walking and cycling is commendable and worthy of support.”
- Helping homeless: “I support his commitment to working on reducing homelessness.”
Why support Kirk LaPointe?
NPA’s Kirk LaPointe is viewed largely as an alternative to Vision Vancouver, Gregor Robertson and the policies of the current government. Others cite LaPointe’s vision for the City and his intelligence.
- Not Vision / Not Gregor Robertson: “Any candidate that opposes Gregor Robertson will have my vote.”
- Concerned about Robertson’s policies: “Although I voted for Robertson in the past, I don’t think he has done a good job. He has his own agenda and doesn’t care what the citizens of vancouver think.”
- For a change: “Vancouver badly needs change.”
- LaPointe’s intelligence / vision: “He’s smart, decent, honest and trustworthy. I like his policies of open government and neighbourhood participation and not being beholden to developers or special interest groups.”
