Net benefit to NDP after announcing Kinder Morgan position
2013-05-10
Vancouver, British Columbia (May 10, 2013) – According to the latest poll from Justason Market Intelligence, Adrian Dix and the BC NDP have benefitted after announcing the NDP’s opposition to Vancouver becoming a major port for oil exports. His position signalled the NDP’s opposition to Kinder Morgan’s plans to expand its Trans-Mountain pipeline.
According to the poll, one-third (35%) of the electorate are now more supportive of the NDP than they were prior to the announcement. A further one-quarter (24%) are now less supportive of the NDP, while 39% say the NDP position on Kinder Morgan makes no difference to their support.
A good proportion of those whose support was affected by this position were already BC NDP supporters. In fact, fully three-quarters (74%) of current NDP supporters had already planned to vote NDP prior to Adrian Dix announcing the NDP position on Kinder Morgan.
But current NDP support does include voters who tell us they previously supported BC Liberal (5%), Green (4%) and Conservative (2%).
Most notably, current NDP support is now drawn from voters who tell us they were undecided prior to the NDP announcing their Kinder Morgan position (16%).
Justason Market Intelligence today released the voter intention numbers indicating the race has tightened some eight percentage points since April, when the firm last polled the electorate. This poll also finds significantly fewer BC residents are undecided.
