Poll finds solid opposition to Enbridge and Kinder Morgan pipeline, tanker proposals

Vancouver, B.C. (February 14, 2013) – A solid majority of B.C. residents continues to oppose supertankers in B.C.’s coastal waters according the most recent poll from Justason Market Intelligence.
Vast majority aware of Enbridge proposal
A strong majority of B.C. residents is now aware of Enbridge’s proposal to transport crude oil from Alberta through B.C.’s inside coastal waters to refineries in Asia (88%). This awareness level is unchanged following an increase between March and October 2012 (78% to 87%).
One-in-two B.C. residents “strongly” oppose Enbridge plans
Justason’s pollsters found that 67% of B.C. residents oppose this plan, including 51% strongly opposed.
Twenty-four per cent (24% up within margin of error from 20% in October) support the proposal including 9% who strongly support.
Slim majority of B.C. also opposes Trans-Mountain expansion
To a lesser degree, a majority opposes Kinder Morgan’s plan to twin the Trans-Mountain pipeline and increase B.C. coastal tanker traffic. Fifty-seven per cent (57%) oppose including 38% of B.C. residents who strongly oppose. About three-in-ten B.C. residents (29%) support the plan including 10% who strongly support.
“Pipelines and tankers are an established top issue of concern here in B.C.,” explains Barb Justason, the firm’s principal. “Overall, pipelines and tankers fall just behind the economy and healthcare, which are tied as the top election concerns here in B.C.”
